PR: 4 | Saddlebrook International HQ for the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy and home to Saddlebrook Prep School for golf, these two 18 hole golf courses cannot be matched for appearance or playability. Their tree lined landscaping and natural waving fairways are abundant with majestic birds of prey. Even non-golfers can appreciate the beauty of Saddlebrook's setting. The lakes, creeks and ponds are a very serene addition to both of Mr. Palmer's designs. The resort offers everything for families on vacation and for business people hosting large and small meetings. One of the main reasons to visit Saddlebrook is to improve your golf game though top quality instruction from pros. Camps available for both young and old, beginner or aficionado. The greens were all redone in 2004 and the Arnold Palmer namesake course now features Tif-Eagle. http://www.saddlebrook.com/golf.html |
PR: 3 | Rocky Point Golf Course A well loved public golf course situated only a quarter of an hour from the Tampa International Airport and close to many premier hotels in the West Shore and Rocky Point areas. This was one of the first golf courses in the state, having opened in 1911 and consistently serving golfers since then (except for a brief period during WW2 when it was closed in order to house POWs). It may be an old course but a brand new clubhouse was opened 1993. Sand and water features make this course beautiful and the naturally maintained wildlife habitat gives refuge to many bird varieties. The head golf pro does a great job of pleasing visitors and keeping them coming back! Its a par 71, and from the back tee it measures 6,328 yards. There is a shag range, a pro shop, snack bar and a drink cart. Rocky Point GC is home to the Vincent Reid Academy of Golf, and a great place to take lessons whether you are a beginner or just want to brush up on the basics. The academy caters to highly skilled golfers and juniors alike. Website features a scorecard and a photo gallery. http://www.rockypointgc.com/ |
PR: 4 | Northdale Golf Club A well designed course located on Northdale Boulevard right in Tampa. It is known as a fantastic value by locals and fairly competes with world class courses in the area. The 18-hole, par-72 Ron Garl design is highly playable but it's the excellent customer service, meticulous course maintenance and superb amenities which make this scenic golf course a favorite for most golfers who are lucky enough to experience it. The wild Floridian landscape is highlighted by magnificent cypress trees and a glittering lake. Situated minutes from the airport, from gorgeous beaches and from other tourist attractions. Website features a scorecard and a survey to fill out and earn a free green fee. A dress code is in effect on the course and in the club, be aware that only soft spikes are allowed. Club has a pro shop and holds regular tournaments. http://www.northdalegolf.com |
PR: 3 | Babe Zaharias Golf Course Located close to downtown Tampa, the course compliments the softly forested residential area that it sits in the center of. The course first began in 1926 and was accompanied by horse stables and an elegant clubhouse that featured a ballroom. At that time fewer than a dozen homes surrounded the course, unlike now, as the Forest Hills neighborhood is a well established region of Tampa Bay. At the tail end of the 1940s, a woman named Mildred "Babe" Zaharias took over the club and lived in the upstairs portion of the clubhouse. After her death the 6,244 yard course fell into disrepair and it took a few decades before interest in starting the course rose again. All 18 greens were constructed anew, including irrigation and changes to sand traps and tees. Babe Zaharias reopened to the public in the fall of 2004. Don't underestimate this course. It's true that both nines are only par-35, but the back side has four par-4s that are over 400 yards. Players of all skill level will find this layout an enjoyable challenge. http://www.babezahariasgc.com/ |
PR: 3 | Rogers Park Golf Course Rogers Park was the only public outdoor area that people of African American descent were allowed to picnic in during the days of segregation in Florida. It became a place of refuge for many families who gathered there after church. And it still has the feel of a sanctuary. The Hillsborough River protects the park from urban noises even though it is only 20 minutes from downtown Tampa. Urban sprawl has thankfully missed this pleasant golf course. It was originally built in 1952, by a handful of caddies from the Palma Ceia CC who, along with a bunch of volunteers, hand constructed 9 holes. They must have done a good job because it did not get redesigned until 1976 (by Ron Garl) and was only renovated for the first time in 2000. It is now the site of the Tampa City Amateur Medal Championship, and has a great driving range, and a three-hole short course. It's a par 71, 6,802 yard course, and has a pro shop, snack bar, drink cart, and a hall that can be rented out for socials. Website features a scorecard, photo gallery, links and a news section. http://www.rogersparkgc.com/ |
PR: 3 | Lake Jovita The two championship courses at Lake Jovita were made to be played on the professional tour, and have almost every kind of geography you could want. Lakes and ponds, valleys and peaks, not to mention interesting vegetation. This world class golf vacation destination features a golf shop rated in the top 100 by Golf Business World. They also have an enormous and sprawling practice facility, a large putting green, and an area specifically designated for private lessons. THe South course was co-created by Tom LehmanCo, a man with hundreds of hours of international golfing "play time" as well as a love for designing golf courses. His main goals in design are playability and beauty. He has fulfilled his aims with this course indeed. The other designer, Kurt Sandness is an award winning golf course architect, and has dedicated himself to improving the golf industry since 1986. Both men successfully brought their wealth of expertise to the courses at Lake Jovita, which are two favorites in the Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg area. PR: 3 | Plantation Palms Golf Club With this championship course, architect David Harman has provided the Tampa Bay area with superb links-style golf. Pop by the pro shop before the game and pick up what you need - whether it be equipment, clothing, shoes, or gift items. If you want to get warmed up before playing, the practice facility is truly comprehensive and will please even the pros. The golfing challenge at PPGC builds steam as players proceed through the course, and gives just enough elevation fluctuations to make advanced players stand up and take notice, but doesn't alienate beginners. The pace is pleasing, with a heavy dose of par-3s. The layout of the course is artistically framed by trees and whiter than snow sand traps. After the game, treat yourself to some fine dining at the on-site restaurant that gets rave reviews. If you are new to golf or simply want to brush up on your skills players would do themselves a favor by signing up for a few of Plantation Palms' individual golf lessons, or group lessons, all given by PGA professionals.
